The first time I was introduced to drug culture, it was on my school campus, and while being awesome (obviously), there was always that other layer of insecurity, like being in a city included risks that could have been minimized. The next time, we retreated to Joshua Tree, the national park near Palm Springs, already made legendary for such activity by Gram Parsons, U2, Entourage, and more. It was safer, it was more exciting, and being engrossed in the natural world is the best way to explore the world inside your own mind.
I’ve written my next article for Matador Network on the subject, and while it’s been posted to my author page, it doesn’t appear to have been placed on the front page, which is unfortunate because it may be the article I’m most proud of in recent memory. There was a lot of chasing up with lawyers and FOIA requests placed to various services, park rangers contacted for perspective. My editor pushed me to be more journalistic and narrative with my writing, and this was an opportunity to get away from the lists and such that I’ve been writing recently.
